WE WILL REMEMBER YOU, JOE STRUMMER!
Punk legend and The Clash frontman Joe Strummer (real name John Mellor) died at his home yesterday (Sunday, December 23) aged 50.

Close friend and fellow pioneer of the punk scene Don Letts told BBC News that the singer had died of a heart attack but it is understood that a post mortem examination will be performed in order to make certain the cause of death.

The news comes as members of The Clash were contemplating a reunion with a one-off gig scheduled that would have seen the original members back together 17 years after they split.

""It's a huge loss," The Clash manager Pete Jenner said. "The band were one of the best live bands, as good as any band I've ever worked with. They were also one of the most important bands to come out of Britain in the Seventies."

The Clash were without doubt one of the most important bands to emerge from the British punk scene, bringing radical politics and a love of both loud guitars and complex Jamaican dub rhythms into a unique synthesis.

Their eponymous debut album and '79 classic, 'London Calling', are two of the defining British albums of the seventies.

In recent years, Strummer had been focussed on his work as Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros, releasing the albums 'Rock Art and the X-Ray Style' in '99 and 'Global a Go Go' in 2001.

"My overriding memory of him and The Clash was that it was never boring," Hein van der Ray, head of the label that signed Strummer and the Mescaleros said. "It is pretty devastating news."
